Course Description
This course introduces you to the cultural, economic, and social significance of videogames and gives you a chance to design your own game.
It is geared to students in Professional and Technical Communication, Software Engineering, Computer Science, and Liberal Studies at a first- or second-year level.
Objectives
Key concepts and theories will be discussed though case studies from particular historical periods.
Being an inquiry-based course, among the reserach questions and topics we can explore within this subject are:
• Ritual, Play and Multimodality,
• Theories and Methods of Game Analysis,
• Formative Casual and Action videogames of the 1970s,
• Fiction and Adventure videogames of the 1980s,
• 3-D videogames of the 1990s,
• Social and “Serious” gameplay in contemporary games, and
• The Future of Games.
